Guide to Top Dallas Attractions

Below is a brief overview of top Dallas attractions. Click on the links for complete articles and more detailed information (descriptions, admission, parking, etc.) to help you plan your visit.

  • Dallas Fair Park: This park showcases the largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world, and houses a whole bunch of other top Dallas attractions, including:
  • State Fair of Texas: From late September until mid-October each year, Fair Park hosts the colossal State Fair of Texas, where they deep fat fry just about everything.
  • Dallas Aquarium at Fair Park: Although operated by the same folks as the Dallas Zoo, (which is located elsewhere) the Dallas Aquarium is where they keep their reptiles and fish. Makes sense, right?
  • The Women’s Museum – An Institute for the Future: Set in one of Fair Park’s historical art deco buildings, this museum is dedicated to women in history.
  • Museum of Nature and Science: A big science museum spanning three buildings which contain a planetarium, an IMAX theater, and an on-site paleontology lab.

Dallas for Nature Lovers

  • Texas Discovery Gardens: This beautiful 7.5 acre organic garden in Dallas Fair Park features an indoor tropical butterfly house.
  • Dallas Zoo: Founded in 1888, the Dallas zoo recently underwent a major remodeling job.
  • Dallas World Aquarium: Don’t confuse this with the previously mentioned Dallas Aquarium at Fair Park. In fact, ‘aquarium’ is misleading, since this place displays birds, jaguars, tropical plants and even penguins.
  • Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Gardens: Something is always blooming at this 66 acre park, where picnicking is encouraged.

Dallas for Art lovers

  • Dallas Arts District: This is the largest self-contained urban arts district in the USA, a 68 acre area containing a wide variety of museums, performance venues and top notch restaurants.
  • Dallas Museum of Art: You can easily spend all day here perusing everything from ancient Rome to modern paintings and even furniture.
  • Nasher Sculpture Center: This open-air sculpture garden in the Dallas Arts Disctrict houses over 300 sculptures from big names in the art world such as Rodin, Giacometti, Calder, Miró, Picasso and Matisse.

Dallas for History buffs

  • Dallas Heritage Village at Old City Park: With skyscrapers as a background, this 20 acre park recreates a 19th century pioneer and Victorian village from actual buildings that have been taken from their original settings in Texas and reconstructed here.
  • Old Red Courthouse: This eye-catching building hosts a museum focused on the history of Dallas County, from Bonnie & Clyde to Mary Kay.
  • Dallas Holocaust Museum: This museum features exhibits, films and historical items pertaining to the Holocaust.
  • Dealey Plaza National Historic Landmark District: Sadly, one of the top Dallas attractions was born of tragedy. The assassination of John F. Kennedy in downtown Dallas on November 22, 1963 left an indelible mark on the American psyche. This three acre park is dedicated to his memory.
  • The Sixth Floor Museum: This popular exhibit is housed in the Texas School Book Depository. It is on the sixth floor, right where it is believed that Kennedy’s assassin took aim.

Dallas for TV show fans

  • Southfork Ranch: Made famous by the TV show, “Dallas,” Southfork is open for daily tours all year round.
